Esteban Gutiérrez excelled this Sunday as he crossed the finish line of the virtual Monaco Grand Prix in second place, his best-ever finish so far in the virtual Formula One championship.
After an electrifying fight in the streets of Monaco, the Mercedes reserve driver began to open his way on the track from the tenth position up to the to second place.
His strategy, which consisted in making two pit stops, paid off in the end. Even though after his second stop he returned to the track in sixth place, by having fresh tires he was able to reach the third position and gradually cut the gap with Charles Leclerc, who he passed with two laps to go.
“It was an intense race, but super fun. We fought and defended ourselves to achieve the best possible result. With the pace we had in the race we moved up positions to fight for second place in the last laps”, said Gutiérrez at the end of the race
His last overtake caused controversy as he had a contact with Ferrari’s driver Charles Leclerc, who finished third.
“After the race, I spoke to Charles and he apologized for the incident in the final laps, it was a great gesture from him. I am very happy with the progress I’ve had, so I will continue preparing myself for the next race”, explained the mexican.
This is the second virtual Grand Prix in which Esteban gets a podium; he finished third in the Spanish Grand Prix.
