Esteban Gutiérrez discovered his love for motorsports in karting like most professional drivers. From an early age, he began to forge a successful path to reach Formula One, in which he is currently the development driver for Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport.



Started karting at the age of 13 in 2004, participating in categories such as Rotax Max Challenge.


Formula BMW

He left Mexico only three years later to make his first incursion into single-seater racing with the Team Autotecnica in Formula BMW USA. There, he became the Rookie of the Year after finishing second overall with four victories and eight podiums. His performance in the USA helped to propel him into the European Championship for the following season.


Formula BMW Europe

In 2008 he claimed the title by 26 points with the Josef Kauffman Racing team and clinched seven wins, six of which were scored consecutively. He rounded out his Formula BMW career with third place in the 2008 World Finals in Mexico City.


Test F1 BMW Sauber

As part of his prize for winning the European BMW Championship, Esteban got his introduction to F1 as he had his first test with the BMW Sauber team in December 2009. That same year he was also invited to take his first test in the GP2 Series.


GP3 Series

2010 saw him wrap up the Championship in the inaugural season of the GP3 Series with two rounds to spare and he also became test and reserve driver for Sauber F1. 


GP2 Series

At the end of 2010, the Mexican driver was signed by the ART Grand Prix team to compete in the GP2 Series. He finished 13th in 2011 with one victory and two podiums and one year later he finished third clinching three victories and seven podiums.


Sauber F1 Team

His talent and the titles he conquered in lower categories paid off in 2013 when he finally became the official driver of the Sauber F1 team. Esteban made his debut at the Australian Grand Prix and his first Top 10 arrived at the Japanese GP in Suzuka crossing the finish line in seventh place.


Scuderia Ferrari

Due to the problems Sauber was facing, which never gave him the opportunity to fight for podiums, Esteban decided to leave the team and immediately became the test driver for Ferrari in 2015.


Haas F1 Team

Being part of a team like Ferrari helped him to stay in F1 and in 2016 he got a full-time seat with the new team, Haas, in which he would be partner of Romain Grosjean.


Formula E & IndyCar

Esteban officially left F1 in 2017 as he did not get the results he expected; nevertheless, new opportunities arrived immediately. At the beginning of the year, he received an invitation from Formula E to participate with Techeetah in the ePrix of Mexico City. Encouraged by representing his country he agreed to compete at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. He also raced in Monaco and Paris and finished with two Top 10.

By mid-2017, Dale Coyne Racing reached out to him to join the IndyCar Series replacing Sébastien Bourdais who was out of action after suffering an accident. Esteban participated in seven dates.



Although different serials opened their doors for him to compete, what Gutiérrez really wanted was to go back to F1 and find a seat that could help him fight for podiums and victories. A new opportunity arrived sooner than expected with Mercedes, who invited him to join the team in 2018 to support them in their simulator programme.


Development Driver for Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport

Esteban will continue working alongside Mercedes as their development driver with the aim of getting a full-time seat for the 2020 season and continue writing his story in the most important category of motorsports.
